Forgotten places of suffering of the Unsuitables: Genocide of Roma in the Independent State of Croatia: research, memorialization, education

About the project

Basic information

Project description

The genocidal suffering of the Roma population in Europe during the Second World War is an insufficiently researched filed in European and Croatian historiography. Yugoslav state authorities, as well as the authorities of the Republic of Croatia today, after the end of the Second World War, did not establish an appropriate system of remembrance culture, and the consequence of this attitude towards the Roma is that today many places of suffering are unknown or insufficiently marked, and not holding commemorations. The research as part of this project will focus on researching the places of Roma suffering in Independent State of Croatia, conducting systematic interdisciplinary research in archives, museums and libraries in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Part of the research will be conducted through field interdisciplinary research, within which testimonies about the places of suffering will be collected. The results of the project will be presented at a mobile exhibition that will be displayed in primary and secondary schools along with expert lectures. A special workshop with students will be organized. The research results will be disseminated in scientific papers in relevant journals and a special monographic work. The plan is to hold an international scientific conference, a public lecture and a forum, and to create a special document in the form of recommendations with the aim of introducing representatives of the authorities, the Roma community, other relevant institutions and individuals to the need to establish a systematic policy of the culture of memory with a focus on the places of Roma suffering.
