The Institute for Applied Social Research was founded by a decision of the Assembly of the University of Zagreb on 26 November 1991. The Institute became a public institution in 1993 with the entry into force of the Institutions Act. According to the Act on Scientific Research, it is a public institute of the Republic of Croatia. By decision of the Managing Board on 18 February 1997, it was renamed the Ivo PIlar Institute of Social Sciences. It was named after the Croatian scientist and publicist Dr. Ivo Pilar, who played an important role in the development of social and humanistic research in Croatia.
