History
The Regional Center was founded by a decision of the Institute’sManaging Board in 1992 as a regional research unit of the Institute. The goal of establishing the Center was, on the one hand, to research and affirm the Croatian component of the Istrian past and present in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary manner, and on the other hand, to highlight its multiculturalism and multiethnicity. Prof. Miroslav Bertoša, PhD, the long-time head of the Pula Center, directed the Center’s work in two areas: scientific research work on the project Istrian Croats between suppressed identity and slow integration and organizing the scientific forum Science and Society.

Activities
The activity of the regional center is aligned with the fundamental goal of the Institute’s network structure – that in addition to regular research activities, each center should also develop activities that will direct it towards the national and global, and not only regional, level of activity. This means that the work of the regional center in Pula on the global and national level is focused on researching the encounters and interpenetration of different national, cultural and linguistic entities, as well as the geostrategic place and significance of Istria in the Mediterranean area. At the regional level, these are the issues of social structure, integration and disintegration of Istrian Croats, and the consequences of 20th century totalitarianism for Istrian social development.
