History

The Pula Regional Center was established by the decision of the Institute’s Board of Directors on September 30, 1992 as a regional research unit of the Institute. The aim of establishing the Regional Center was, on the one hand, to research and affirm the Croatian component of Istrian past and present in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary manner, and on the other hand, to highlight its multiculturalism and multiethnicity. The first head of the Pula Regional Center was Prof. Miroslav Bertoša, PhD, who was later succeeded by Stipan Trogrlić, PhD. Since 2021, the head of the center is Marin Beroš, PhD.

In its more than thirty years of existence, the Pula Regional Center has changed its headquarters several times, and since 2022 it is located in premises in Stankovićeva Street. The current work of the regional center continues the mission of its founders, researching Istrian history and present in a multidisciplinary manner, but also with a strong focus on the future of the peninsula. In this sense, today’s Pula Regional Center covers a range of areas and topics, ranging from sociological, historical, political, pedagogical, and even philosophical.

Activities

The activities of the Pula Regional Center are aligned with the fundamental goal of the Institute’s network structure, which enables balanced social development in all regions of the Republic of Croatia while supporting the fulfillment of local and regional potentials. For this reason, the Pula Regional Center follows the Institute’s Strategy related to the transfer of scientific knowledge, dissemination of scientific research results, and popularization of science at the local level, which, along with project activities related to topics of local and regional importance, positions the Regional Center as an important place in the development of local and regional development policies, thanks to its scientific contribution. However, it is important to note that the activities of the center are not focused only on the local and regional level, they are also aimed towards the national and global levels, and in this sense they explore the encounters and interpenetration of different national, cultural and linguistic entities, as well as the geostrategic and cultural significance of Istria within the wider Mediterranean area.
