The journal Histria antiqua was launched in 1995 as an annual periodical publication of the International Research Centre for Archaeology, Brijuni-Medulin
The objectives of the MIC for Archaeology, founded in 1994, were: systematic improvement of scientific research activities in the field of archaeology and protection of monumental heritage in Istria; organization of archaeological excavations and field practice; preservation and presentation of antiquities and promotion of Croatian archaeology and related disciplines in Europe and beyond; connection with related university and scientific research institutions in the homeland and the world. The Centre is also active in exhibition promotion of the archaeological and historical heritage of Istria in Croatia and abroad and in organizing international archaeological thematic conferences, along with the regular annual publication of the journal Histria antiqua. Since 17 December 2009, it has been operating as a functional Centre for Archaeological Research of the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences, which has been the publisher of the journal since volume 19 (2010).
The journal Histria antiqua was published under the auspices of UNESCO and is referenced in the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) as a successor to earlier indexing (Répetroire d’Art et d’Archéologie) through the Research Libraries Group and Art History Information Program / J. Paul Getty Trust (USA) and the Instituts de l’Information Scientifiques et Techniques (INIST) of the Center National de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), and since 2005 also in the Catalog of the work in the UNESCO Bibliographic Data Base (UNESDOC).
