Motivators and barriers for collective action

About the project

Basic information

Project description

The general goal of the project is to determine and investigate motivations and barriers to participation in different forms of collective actions (CA, actions that are pursued with the aim of achieving group goals or political solidarity). We will focus on the perceptions of justice and injustice, perceived efficacy, personal dispositions, and barriers to participation. Also, we will determine how Croatian citizens from general public and NGOs members understand CA, their motivators and barriers, and the meaning they assign to these phenomena. Along with testing the multidimensional conceptualizations of the perception of social justice and injustice, we will explore their roles, as well as roles of perceived barriers to participation and personal dispositions (after controlling for overall group efficacy, perception of injustice and content and strength of identification) in explaining (non)participation in different forms of CA. We will use an exploratory sequential design relying on qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative research methods (online panel survey in three waves) on two samples: a representative sample of adult Croatian citizens and a convenient sample of the members of different civic organizations and initiatives. Integration of qualitative and quantitative research findings will help us determine the similarities and differences in motivators and barriers to different forms of CA (normative, non-normative non-violent, and non-normative violent) between citizens and members of civic organizations and initiatives. Along with scientific contribution, the results of this project will have practical implications for policymakers (for programs and politics related to enticing civic participation and prevention of violent forms of CA) and members and leaders of NGOs (e.g., for attracting new members, mobilization of citizens and members and proposals for policymakers aiming to reduce or remove barriers to participation in non-violent forms of CA). The principal investigator is Renata Franc, and team members are colleagues from Ivo Pilar Institute (Ines Sučić, Tomislav Pavlović, Marina Maglić, Vanja Dergić, Marko Mustapić, Benjamin Perasović, Iva Sušilović), from other Croatian institutions (Zoran Sušanj, Faculty of humanities and social sciences, University of Rijeka; Ana Belajdžić, Faculty of humanities and social sciences, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer Osijek; Ivana Vrselja, Catholic University of Croatia) and from aboard (Hilary Pilkington, University of Manchester; Roger Soler-i-Marti, Pompeu Fabra University).
