The Annual Conference of the Gypsy Lore Society at the Pilar Institute; Zagreb, 03/09/2026

The annual conference of the Gypsy Lore Society – the oldest and most important international scholarly society dedicated to researching the history, language, culture, and social status of the Roma – will be held at the premises of the Pilar Institute on September 3, 2026. Since its foundation in 1888, the Gipsy Lore Society has brought together researchers from a wide range of academic disciplines and from all parts of the world, playing an exceptionally important role in the development of Romani Studies as a field of scholarly research

The Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and the Institute for Migration Research (Zagreb) are hosting this conference, which will be held in Zagreb from 2 to 5 September 2026. The conference is expected to bring together between 100 and 150 presenters from Croatia and abroad. The Organizing Committee consists of Danijel Vojak, PhD (Pilar Institute, Zagreb), Professor Ivan Andrijanić, PhD (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb), Associate Professor Petar Radosavljević, PhD (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb), and Filip Škiljan, PhD (Institute for Migration Research, Zagreb). The Scientific Committee includes Elena Marushiakova, PhD (Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology, Slovak Academy of Sciences), Tatiana Zachar Podolinská, PhD (Slovak Academy of Sciences), Professor Željko Holjevac, PhD (Pilar Institute, Zagreb), Professor Domagoj Tončinić, PhD (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb), and Marina Perić Kaselj, PhD (Institute for Migration Research, Zagreb).

The opening of the Annual Conference of the Gypsy Lore Society will take place on Wendesday, 2 September, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, in Lecture Hall 7, beginning at 9:00 a.m. On the same day at 11 a.m., the exhibition “The History of Romani Studies in Croatia’” by Danijel Vojak, with co-authors Petra Radosavljević, Ivan Andrijanić, Filip Škiljan, Ivan Olujić, and Ahmad Sawas Najjar, will be opened in front of the hall.
