From reviews
Saša Poljanec-Borić’s analyses of Croatian society always include the confrontation of diachronic and synchronic analysis in the research of social phenomena and, above all, her unique sociological imagination in overcoming mere positivism, which leads to a new perspective and new proposals for resolving perceived social contradictions. Her selected theoretical and analytical concepts have enough scientific breadth, personal curiosity, theoretical relevance, but also local contextuality and creative imagination to always recognize social problems in a new, original way and offer solutions for them. Within Croatian sociology, this is a rare research approach in the analyses of our society. This book will become indispensable not only for sociologists and researchers from the field of social sciences, but also for all those who are trying to detect what we have been doing in space so far – badly. And they will also find well-founded advice in it so that, if we take more care of common and public goods, we can work even better in the future.
Prof. Drago Čengić, PhD
The author approaches all topics systematically, analytically and above all critically. She analyzes the spatial and political genesis of problems, draws well-founded conclusions and offers solutions so that the detected problems can be corrected. Her analyses within the scientific approach of the sociology of space go beyond the framework of urban or rural sociology and also deal with regional factors that affect security, social equality, ecological balance and urban planning. It is characteristic of the author that she chooses the research topics she writes about based on her strategic insight into the challenges that Croatian society has faced in the last fifteen years. Therefore, in this book she opens up topics for discussion about Croatian space and for its scientific elaboration. This book reflects the author’s capacity to think about space in a range from strategic analysis to the analysis of characteristic situations in space that indicate the inadequacy of political and planning processes. This book is therefore an important contribution to the understanding of our time and its contradictions.
