Project description
The “Historical Atlas of Cities” project would deal with the collection, scientific processing and publication of cartographic and other historical sources for the history of Croatian cities. It would be based on archival material stored in our and foreign archival and museum institutions. The historical atlas of cities would consist of a cartographic and a textual part. The analysis and interpretation of cartographic sources in comparison with other archival sources (especially the minutes of the city chiefdom) in the textual part would enable new knowledge about the spatial development of Croatian cities, their historical identities, as well as an overview of the development of Croatian cities in the European context. The cartographic part of the atlas would represent high-quality and easy-to-read reproductions of maps and plans of selected cities. In this way, for the first time, all relevant cartographic sources for the history of Croatian cities would be found in one place, which would make their use available to other researchers. All atlases are based on original scientific research. Research is conducted interdisciplinary and always in a European context. The cities were chosen according to the “case study” principle. Characteristic models of cities were chosen, choosing among them those that were less eco-historically researched.
