We-ID Project Members at the Consortium Meeting; Stockholm, 16-17/06/2026
Midway through the We-ID project, the consortium met in Stockholm from 15 to 17 June to discuss the ongoing fieldwork carried out across different European contexts and to reflect on emerging research findings
The meeting took place at the Council of the Baltic Sea States. The Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences was represented by Caroline Hornstein-Tomić, PhD, Andrej Ivan Nuredinović, PhD, and Dino Vukušić, phD.
The programme included consortium discussions, visits to Fryshuset and Mångkulturellt Centrum, and a stakeholder panel with Aza Cheragwandi, Nikola Lewicka, Tony Blomqvist and Caroline Hornstein-Tomić. The panel offered valuable perspectives on how migration, civic participation and belonging shape democratic life at the local level.
The discussions highlighted that Europe’s migration stories are becoming increasingly diverse, and that countries with long histories of emigration, such as Croatia, Bulgaria and Lithuania, are increasingly becoming destinations for labour migration. It was also emphasized that integration cannot stop with the first job, but requires long-term strategies, support for local actors and recognition of the economic and social contribution of newcomers.
In conclusion, the meeting underlined the importance of stable local institutions, long-term partnerships and sustained investment in communities. Local organisations and civil society represent essential democratic infrastructure, creating spaces where participation, trust and belonging are practised in everyday life.
