Renata Glavak Tkalić, PhD, and research assistant Bruno Škovrlj at 19th International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking; Las Vegas, 26-28/05/2026
Renata Glavak Tkalić, PhD, and Bruno Škovrlj participated in the 19th International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking, organized by University of Nevada, Las Vegas International Gaming Institute, from May 26 to May 28, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Renata Glavak Tkalić, PhD, presented research entitled “Subjective Well-Being as a Mediator Between Internalizing Symptoms and Problem Gambling in a Nationally Representative Sample”, which reported findings on the relationship between symptoms of anxiety and depression and problem gambling among individuals who had engaged in gambling during the year preceding the survey, as well as on the mediating role of subjective well-being in this relationship.
Bruno Škovrlj presented research entitled “Gambling Involvement and Problem Gambling: Findings from a General Population Survey”, which examined patterns of participation in various gambling formats as well as the relationship between participation in different gambling formats, involvement in multiple gambling formats, and problem gambling. The findings indicate that involvement in multiple gambling formats is associated with an increased risk of problem gambling. There is a need for systematic monitoring of overall gambling participation rather than focusing solely on particular gambling formats that are commonly considered particularly risky (e.g., sports betting and casino games). Participation in multiple gambling formats may serve as a useful indicator for the early identification of individuals at increased risk of developing gambling-related problems, enabling the implementation of targeted preventive interventions.
The presented research was conducted within the framework of the Substance use among the General Population in the Republic of Croatia: 2023, conducted in collaboration of the PIlar Institute and the Croatian Institute of Public Health.
