From the Preface
This collection of papers brings new insights and critical reinterpretations of open research questions in order to fill the gaps in previous research and to nuancedly innovate knowledge about the Slana and Metajna camps on the island of Pag. In addition to a comprehensive overview of the establishment, operation and dissolution of these camps in 1941 and the crimes committed against the detainees, a critical review of the issue of the number of victims in historiography, journalism and the public, as well as a detailed insight into the court proceedings against Slavko Baljak and others before the Zadar District Court in 1952/1953, the additional value of the collection lies in its interdisciplinary contribution to understanding the insufficiently researched culture of memory of the Pag camps and their victims from World War II to the present day. It should be taken into account that the researchers involved were unable to consult sources in the Italian military archive in Rome, which was closed to the public during the project due to complex infrastructure works aimed at harmonizing with fire protection regulations. In addition, specialized speleological and forensic-anthropological field research could shed additional light on the issues of the Slana and Metajna camps. Therefore, attention should be drawn to the need for future research that could potentially supplement the key findings of the authors of the papers in this collection from specific angles.
