Interdisciplinary Scientific and Professional Conference Northern Croatia and the City of Varaždin in the Homeland War; Varaždin, 08/10/2026
Organized by the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences – specifically its regional centers in Osijek and Varaždin – and co-organized by the Institute for Scientific Work of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) in Varaždin, a one-day interdisciplinary scientific and professional conference titled Northern Croatia and the City of Varaždin in the Homeland War was held on October 8, 2026, in the ceremonial assembly hall of Varaždin County
The financial sponsors of the conference were Varaždin County and the City of Varaždin; they expressed great appreciation to the organizers and emphasized their readiness to provide further financial support for future scientific conferences addressing the values stemming from the Homeland War. Prefect Anđelko Stričak opened the conference on behalf of the financial sponsors.
The conference was divided into two thematic sections: the first focused on the scientific community’s examination of values derived from the Homeland War, while the second part was dedicated to oral history, featuring direct participants in the September 1991 events in Varaždin who presented their perspectives on the war to the public. The scientific community addressed ten topics with sixteen participants, including one scholar from Pristina (Republic of Kosovo).
In the second, afternoon session of the conference, nine topics were presented by an equal number of participants. The public in Varaždin—including a significant number of veterans—showed great interest in the topics presented regarding the Homeland War and supported the organization and holding of the event. In addition to the local public, the event received extensive coverage from both electronic and print media.
