MIC – VIS 2026: TYPeS Project Research Results Presented; Vis, 16-19/09/2026
At the 6th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference Mediterranean Islands Conference – VIS 2026, researchers involved in the TYPeS project, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, presented research findings on youth social participation and related historical topics concerning the Croatian islands. The research findings were presented in three thematic project sessions, comprising a total of 13 presentations, with one additional presentation delivered in a session devoted to demographic topics
The session Social Participation of Youth on the Croatian Islands featured four presentations: Marko Mustapić, Vanja Dergić and Marija Antić, “Youth on the Croatian Islands and Collective Memory of the 20th Century”; Nikša Dubreta and Antonija Beroš, “From ‘Killing the Winter Boredom’ to Social Recognition: Social Participation of Young People from the Tartajun Association”; Benjamin Perasović, “More Than Participation? Women’s Bocce Club Komiža in the Context of Social Participation of Young People on the Island of Vis”; and Dino Vukušić and Andrej Ivan Nuredinović, “‘A Local Story of a Global Sport’: Cricket in Zagreb and on the Island of Vis.”
The session Dalmatian Islands in the 20th Century: Selected Themes featured five presentations. Vicko Marelić delivered two presentations, “1866 and All That – The Naval Battle of Vis in International Diplomacy, 1914–1918” and “Bridge over Troubled Sea – The Curzolari Islands as a Geopolitical Stake in the First World War.” Ivan Hrstić presented “Building a Communist Society on the Island”; Marko Mustapić presented “European Water Polo Champions from the Island of Korčula: The History of a Club”; and Josip Mihaljević and Ivan Hrstić presented “The Opening of the Island of Vis to Foreign Nationals in the Twilight of Yugoslav Socialism.”
The session Media, Gender and Ecology on Croatian Islands featured four presentations: Rašeljka Krnić, “Media Framing of Croatian Islands: An Exploratory Analysis of Regional News Discourse”; Kristina Dobra and Augustin Derado, “Waste Management on a Small Island: Community Practices and Infrastructural Constraints on Zlarin”; Dražen Šimleša, “Youth Activism for Sustainable Development on the Island of Korčula”; and Marija Antić, Rašeljka Krnić and Vanja Dergić, “Islands as Political Spaces: Gender and Local Leadership in Croatia.”
In addition to the presentations delivered in the project sessions, Andrej Ivan Nuredinović, Dino Vukušić and Luka Kropivnik presented a paper entitled “Leisure as Cultural Work in Croatian and Slovenian Diasporic Communities in Australia” as part of the Migration; Demography session.
On the final day of the conference, the TYPeS project team also held a working meeting to evaluate the tasks completed during the previous period and to define the team’s responsibilities through the end of the current year.
