MIC – VIS 2026: Research Findings on Return Migration to Croatian Islands presented by Rebeka Mesarić Žabčić, PhD, Mario Bara, PhD, and Krešimir Ivanda, PhD; Vis, 16-19/09/2026
As part of the 6th Scientific International Conference MIC – VIS (Vis, September 16-19, 2026), Rebeka Mesarić Žabčić, PhD (Pilar Institute, Zagreb), Mario Bara, PhD (Catholic University of Croatia, Zagreb), and Krešimir Ivanda, PhD (Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb) presented research findings on return migration to Croatian islands within the DinamiRH project, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU
The presentation focused on the islands of Brač, Lošinj, Vis, Korčula and Cres, examining the motives for return, the role of family and emotional ties to the place of origin, as well as the entrepreneurial activities and development potential of returnees.
The research findings indicate that return migration to Croatian islands cannot be based solely on emotions, nostalgia and attachment to one’s place of origin. Long-term sustainable return requires adequate living and development conditions – accessible and affordable housing, year-round employment opportunities beyond the tourist season, and accessible and high-quality public services, including kindergartens, schools and healthcare. When such conditions are in place, returnees can become important drivers of the social, demographic and economic revitalization of Croatian islands. Their knowledge, experience, social and professional networks, and capital acquired during their years abroad represent a valuable development potential for island communities.
Return is not only about coming home – it can become a driver of new development for Croatian islands.
