Researchers engaged in the project Dynamics and challenges of migration, re-migration and immigration in the Republic of Croatia (DinamiRH) Marija Geiger Zeman, PhD, Ivo Turk, PhD, Mirela Holy, PhD (IMIN), and Nikola Šimunić, PhD (IMIN), participated with their presentations at the 6th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference MIC Vis 2026 (Vis, September 16-19, 2026)

MIC – VIS, 2026

Marija Geiger Zeman, PhD. Mirela Holy, PhD (IMIN), and Nikola Šimunić, PhD (IMIN) presented “Mediterranean Migration and Silent Women’s Voices: Mapping the Field Through Narrative Literature Review”. In addition to the global context, the lack of visibility of women and their migration experiences is also evident in the context of Mediterranean migrations, which are continuously interpreted and portrayed as a “male phenomenon” (Schmoll, 2025). Gender is a key factor that influences all phases of the migration process and the experiences of migrants: women are more vulnerable and exposed to various forms of inequality and discrimination (Abel, 2022). The introduction and application of a gender perspective opens up space for the voices of migrant women and ensures the visibility of their experiences in scientific research.

Ivo Turk, PhD, Nikola Šimunić, PhD (IMIN), and Stanko Rihtar gave a presentation “The Impact of Transportation Accessibility on the Number and Age of Household Members by Town and Municipality in Lika-Senj County (2001 – 2021)”. Croatia is in a long-term demographic crisis whose main characteristics are depopulation and population aging. In such circumstances, the question arises: does transport accessibility in relation to regional centers affect the number and age of household members in Lika-Senj County? Since the majority of the observed county consists of peripheral rural areas in a very advanced process of demographic aging, a significant share of elderly and single-person households is evident. Since the county encompasses parts of mountainous and Adriatic Croatia, the authors analyzed and presented the differences between these two parts of the county.

The project Dynamics and Challenges of Migration, Re-Migration and Immigration in the Republic of Croatia is funded by the European NextGeneration EU program (01/08-73/23-2519-18).
