EUDA: European Union Drugs Agency
This year’s winter school was attended by 19 participants from 11 countries. In addition to researchers from the European Union Drugs Agency, lectures were also given by experts from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Portuguese Institute for Addictive Behaviors and Addictions (ICAD). The school’s special focus was on the role of social networks in the area of substance use.
The lectures focused on the constant changes in the drug market, including the wider geopolitical context, but also new trends observed in individual European countries. Different approaches to the prevention and treatment of addiction and the reduction of harms associated with the use of addictive substances were also presented. The potential role of social networks in these activities was particularly emphasized through awareness-raising campaigns, the development of widely available preventive activities and the examination of the effects of such interventions through online research. Portuguese drug policy was also presented and the future of international public policies was discussed.
